Some of the leading names in European optometry discussed the ‘life-changing’ benefits of specialist scleral lenses as part of an international masterclass hosted by a Northampton optometrist.

The two-day workshop at Tompkins Knight and Son Optometrists in Kingsley Road, Northampton focused on the theory and practice of scleral lenses and was delivered to 30 top practitioners by The European School of Scleral Lenses (Euroscole)

The event included lectures and hands-on workshops focusing on the basics of scleral lenses, with attendees guided by world-renowned speakers including Euroscole founder Daddi Fadel, Dr Tom Arnold from the USA and Moorfields specialist Ken Pullum.

Brian Tompkins, director at TK&S Optometrists, said: “If you don’t embrace something new, new technologies, new techniques, then you have a chance of getting bored. Who wants to work in a boring job? None of us, all of us have a passion.

“It’s crucial to enjoy life in your optometric practice. I still adore the crying patient who gives me that hug because I’ve taken them from barely being able to see in front of their face to literally 20/20 vision.

“If optometrists want to give themselves a really golden opportunity to learn something new, something exciting, something life-changing and just astoundingly good for patients, then scleral lenses give you the chance to do that.”

The event was supported by The Hakim Group, providing independent optometrists and contact lens practitioners with the chance to advance their clinical skills and deliver an even more complete service to their patients.

The second part of the workshops, due to take place in a few months, will focus on the advanced fitting of the lenses, technology and complications management.

The event was held on the same day that TK&S director Dr Keyur Patel picked up two awards at the Eyecare 2022 conference in Glasgow. He was named Optometrist of the Year and Contact Lens Practitioner of the Year while TK&S was a finalist in the Practice of the Year category.
